Nothing I do is good enough for you. You always have a snide remark or a criticism.
Like what?
You always say things like, “You are such an idiot.” Or, “That isn’t good enough.” Or, “What were you thinking? You fail at everything!”
I’m just trying to help you do your best! When I say these things, you try harder.
No! Even though I try harder, I don’t do better. You just discourage me even more. I hate you! I don’t care what you have to say, so just shut up and go away!
I can’t shut up and you know I can’t go away. There’s no place I can go because I’m in you. I am you.
Read more...Ignore me? You need me! You are so incompetent you couldn’t make it a single day without me. Who do you think you are? You can’t ignore me! When are you going to stop being such an idiot?
Answer me! When are you going to stop being such an idiot?
Hey! I asked you a question!
You can’t ignore me forever! You’ll be back.
Thought
It’s fine to embrace your self-talk when it is constructive, and to ignore it when it is condemning. You do not have to submit to this harsh inner critic that was formed in you when you were young by the criticisms of others. When you were born you had no idea of what was good or bad, acceptable or not. You learned how to talk to yourself from what others said to you.
Challenge any lies that were injected into you and examine them in the light of God’s truth. Do not let them masquerade as truth in your mind. Stop laying the whip of self-condemnation on your back. The price of your true imperfections and failures has already been paid in full by Jesus.
Let the Holy Spirit speak to you about the areas of your life in which He wants you to grow. Give grace to yourself as though you were a child, because you are. We are all children who are meant to mature into who God intended us to be. We are all continually being conformed by God into the image of His Son Jesus. It is a journey of imperfection that is not aided by a harsh and condemning critic. Let Jesus be your companion on this journey and refresh yourself daily with His grace and mercy. God loves you for who you are and will continue to grow you into who you were meant to be.
